Professional Standards
The Alexander Technique is an
educational discipline. Its objective is not to treat or cure
disease. Instead the student learns to become aware of, and to
change, faulty habits of psychomotor coordination. The student
assumes responsibility for applying what he or she learns in
lessons, and in the process may gradually overcome a wide
array of psychophysical complaints caused by habits of misuse.
Alexander teachers are regulated through AmSAT, which assumes
responsibility for maintaining standards for the profession by
ensuring the highest level of skill and professional conduct
of its members.
AmSAT members must fulfill
continuing education requirements and uphold AmSAT’s
Professional Code of Conduct. AmSAT’s teacher training courses
are three years and require a minimum of 1600 class hours to
complete. A teacher/student ratio of one to five is required.
Graduates of AmSAT-certified courses receive certification
from AmSAT and are eligible for membership in the Society.
AmSAT teacher training courses and training course directors
must also meet high standards and are evaluated and approved
by AmSAT’s Training Approval Committee and Board of Directors.
Training directors must have a minimum of ten years of
teaching experience, develop an approved course curriculum and
school policies, and undergo a re-evaluation every three
years.
AmSAT
The American Society for the
Alexander Technique (formerly NASTAT) was founded in 1987.
Today it is the pre-eminent national society for establishing
and maintaining standards for the profession. AmSAT’s mission
includes developing and maintaining standards for teachers and
teacher training courses, providing services to members, and
educating the public about the Alexander Technique. AmSAT is
affiliated with other professional teacher’s organizations
around the world that share the same high professional
standards of practice. Today there are fifteen affiliated
societies worldwide sharing these standards, offering
reciprocal membership to teachers, and awarding teacher
certification.

these standards or to obtain a national list of member
