Information/Registration: South Washington County Schools Community Education, 651-458-6600    Questions about the Technique: Tully at 651-739-6099 or DBBsTbn@aol.com

Description: What do Paul Newman, Annette Bening and Robin Williams all have in common? Each has used the Alexander Technique to enhance performance and stage presence. Every day you "perform" with your body when you drive a car, use a computer, exercise, write, cook, play an instrument, and so forth. Unconscious habits of tension can interfere with your activity and cause fatigue or pain. Find out how your mindset affects your muscles, how unconscious habits can sabotage your posture, and how the Technique can help you enhance your comfort and performance in all your daily activities whether it's working at your desk, carrying your child, or swinging a golf club. It's about recognizing & preventing the habits that interfere with your optimal poise and coordination. With the hands-on guidance of an Alexander Teacher, you learn to think in a way that lets you move through your daily activities with increasing lightness and ease. Students of the Technique regularly report a decrease in pain and fatigue, improved coordination, increasing awareness and focus ... and quite often an extra inch of height! The class sessions will explore the principles of the work, & an individually scheduled half hour private lesson with the instructor (optional) will introduce the practical aspects. Part of the class will involve learning a constructive rest position while laying on the floor. You may wish to bring a yoga mat or towel.

The Alexander Technique for Performance Anxiety

Instructor: Ruth Rootberg

Time: Friday afternoon, May 30

Location:  Annual Symposium: Care of the Professional Voice, Philadelphia, PA

Cost: Open to all Registrants

Pre-requisite: Register as participant in conference – see description

Information/Registration: Ruth at 413-687-7566 or RRootberg@comcast.net

Description: When a performer experiences anxiety, much of the careful rehearsal preparation  goes awry. The singer may have to overcome dry mouth, excess throat tension, shallow breathing, pitch problems, disorientation, or memory loss at a time when he/she most wants to succeed – in front of an audience.  In this demonstration, Ruth Rootberg, AmSAT certified Alexander teacher, will work hands-on with singers and explain the several tools available to minimize the downside of performance anxiety by using the Alexander Technique in conjunction with an appropriate vocal tehcnique. This workshop is part of a 5-day national conference. For more information and to register, go to www.voicefoundation.org/annualsymposium.html.
